The most famous instant messaging application in the world has a feature that allows us to discover all the data it stores about us. If you want to know how to download the data that WhatsApp keeps about you, read on.
On the occasion of the entry into force of the new data protection law on May 25, 2018, companies have begun to move file. The new privacy policies of Facebook, Instagram and Twitter now join WhatsApp. As you know, from next month users will have more control over the information stored in the different applications we use and the use made of them.
Once we know it, we will have different options: from agreeing and accepting with the new service terms of these apps, going through to eliminate a part of the content until we delete our profiles in social networks and WhatsApp. In this post we will explain how to download your WhatsApp data and know firsthand what Zuckerberg knows about you.
The first thing we must do is install the latest update of WhatsApp, version 2.18.128 where the data that will begin to be implemented with the entry into force of the RGPD is collected. At the moment it is available in the beta version of Google Play, that is, we will be able to have a copy of the WhatsApp data in Android, as they advance in WABetaInfo.
Once we have it, the first thing that appears will be a pop-up window where we are informed that WhatsApp is updating the Terms of Service and the Privacy Policy with new functions to comply with the new data protection legislation of the European Union.
Once accepted, the pop-up window will disappear and the option to download a WhatsApp data report is enabled. To do this we go to Settings> Account> Request info from my account. Here we will open a message to request the report, which we will do by clicking on it.
As detailed, will be ready in three days and may be downloaded for a few weeks. Of course, keep in mind that your request will be canceled if you make changes to your account that affect the mobile number or delete it. You can see it in more detail below:
In the generated file we will find the following:
- Phone number
- First name
- Connection status
- Online time
- The current IP connection and previous
- Type of device
- Version of the installed app
- Mobile operating system version
Of course, if you are interested in recovering an erased conversation, archived messages or current ones, we regret to say that in the WhatsApp data report you will not find any of this.
The reason is that only the data that WhatsApp has of us is included, and as you know, WhatsApp conversations and calls are encrypted from end to end, so they cannot access its content.
